4Runner Hood Solar Panel: 120W Lensun on a 5th Gen (2026)

Quick answer

For a 4th or 5th gen 4Runner (2003-2024), Lensun makes a 120W hood solar panel that sticks on with adhesive tape, no drilling, and charges the battery while the truck is parked. Lensun also lists separate 4Runner panels for hoods with a scoop and a 110W panel for the 6th gen (2025+). Code TVO10 takes 10% off.

So, the 4Runner's hood is pretty much wasted space. In my October 2026 video, a 5th gen 4Runner got the 120W Lensun hood panel. It keeps the battery charging while the truck sits, so the fridge and power station keep running, and the roof stays free for the tent and the rack. I've also run a Lensun hood panel on my 2nd gen Tundra and tested one on a 2024 Tacoma, so a lot of what's below comes from living with these.

Which Lensun panel fits your 4Runner

Lensun sizes each panel to a specific hood, so pick by generation and by whether your hood has a scoop. Here's what's on their site right now:

Look at the product photos and compare them to your hood before you order. The scoop versions are a different panel.

Why the hood and not the roof

The reason why I like the hood is because it's free real estate. On an overland build the roof is usually taken by a rooftop tent, a rack, or both. A hood panel uses space you weren't using anyway, and it's always charging, even while you're parked.

Newer Toyotas have a lot of electronics that slowly pull the starting battery down when they sit for days, and that includes the 5th gen 4Runner. Keeping a lead-acid battery above about 50% helps it last longer, and that's the whole job of a hood panel.

Install: adhesive, no drilling

The panel on the 4Runner went on with adhesive tape. No holes in the hood. From the installs I've done on the Tacoma and Tundra, here's what I'd tell you:

  1. Put the vinyl decal down first. Lensun sells the panel with a vinyl underlay. It protects the paint under the adhesive and makes it easier to remove later.
  2. Run tape along the edges and the vertical ribs. That's where you get the most hold.
  3. Seal the edges. On the Tundra I used silicone or Sikaflex type sealant around the edge so water and debris don't get under it and start lifting it.
  4. Fuse it close to the battery. And keep the wires away from heat and anything they can rub on in the engine bay.

Get the MPPT controller

On the 4Runner panel you can choose the panel only, the panel plus vinyl decal, the panel plus MPPT solar controller, or the complete kit with all three. The controller is the upgrade I've covered in my videos. It wires to the starting battery, keeps it from overcharging, and gets more out of the panel. The one I tested on the Tacoma also had a LOAD output and paired over Bluetooth with the Solar Life app, so you can see volts, amps, temperature and how much it made that day right from your phone.

How much power to expect

Be realistic here. On the 100W panel I tested on the Tacoma, I saw about 60 to 80W at peak sun, not the full 100. Angle, temperature and shade all change what you get.

So I look at it as maintenance charging. It keeps the starting battery topped off and helps cover a fridge, a dash cam or an interior light you left on while you're parked.

Price and the code

When I filmed the 4Runner video on October 28, the 120W panel was on sale for $349, down from $539. Lensun's prices move with their sales, so check the current price on their site. Code TVO10 takes 10% off. Whether it stacks on top of a sale price is up to Lensun, so try it at checkout and see.

My verdict

If your 4Runner sits for days at a time, or you run a fridge and a power station off it while camped, a hood panel is an easy add. If your roof is already full with a tent and rack, the hood is the spot that's left for solar. For me personally, the hood panel has become one of my favorite upgrades on the Tundra. The MPPT controller and the vinyl decal are the two add-ons worth looking at. If you have a 5th gen with a scoop, or a 2025+ 4Runner, just make sure you order the panel made for your hood.

FAQ

Does Lensun make a hood solar panel for the 4Runner?

Yes. Lensun has a 120W panel for 4th and 5th gen 4Runners (2003-2024), 80W and 110W panels for 4th and 5th gen hoods with a scoop, and a 110W panel for the 6th gen (2025+).

Do you have to drill the hood to install it?

No. The panel on the 5th gen 4Runner in my video went on with adhesive tape. A vinyl decal under it protects the paint and makes removal easier.

How much power does a hood solar panel make?

Less than the rating. On a 100W Lensun hood panel I saw about 60 to 80W at peak sun. Angle, heat and shade all lower it.

Will a hood solar panel keep my 4Runner battery from dying?

That's what it's for. It trickle charges the starting battery while the truck is parked, which helps when the truck sits for days or you run accessories while camped.
