Biggest Tire on a Tacoma or 4Runner Without a Lift (2026)
I earn a commission if you buy through these links or codes, at no extra cost to you. I only list brands I've used or tested on my own trucks.
The biggest tire on a stock Tacoma with no lift is a 285/70R17, which is about 33 inches. On a 2024+ Tacoma it clears at full lock with no trimming. On a 2016–2023 Tacoma it needs a small trim of the front fender liner and rear fender flare, or you can drop to a 32-inch tire and cut nothing.
So, I've tested this on two trucks: a bone stock 2020 TRD Off-Road (3rd gen) and a 2024 Tacoma (4th gen) on factory wheels and suspension. Here's what fit and what rubbed.
Biggest tire by truck, no lift
| Truck | Biggest no-lift tire | Trimming |
|---|---|---|
| Tacoma 4th gen, 2024+ | 285/70R17 (33") | None |
| Tacoma 4th gen, 2024+ | 285/75R17 (34") | Remove mud flaps and the removable piece behind the front tire, plus a little trimming up front |
| Tacoma 3rd gen, 2016–2023 | 285/70R17 (33") | Front fender liner and rear of the front fender flare |
| Tacoma 3rd gen, 2016–2023 | 275/70R17 (32") | None |
| 4Runner 5th gen, 2010–2024 | Not tested at stock height. 33s (285/70R17) needed a 2.5" lift and a body mount chop | — |
2024+ Tacoma: 33s fit with zero trimming
On the 2024 Tacoma I kept the stock TRD wheels, because I know a lot of you like that look. I mounted a 255/80R17 on one side and a 285/70R17 on the other. Both are about 33 inches tall. The 255 is skinnier and stays tucked inside the fender flares. The 285 is wider and looks a lot more proportionate on the truck.
At full lock, the 285/70R17 had about 2 inches of clearance to the driver side and 2.5 inches on the passenger side. That's enough that you won't hit it in a dip or on a bump. Looking straight down the side, it sits even with the fender flares. That's the size I went with, on Toyo Open Country R/T Trails.
I also tried a 285/75R17, a 34-inch tire. It had about 2 inches up front, but at the rear of the wheel well it was too close for comfort in my opinion. To run 34s on stock suspension, take off the mud flaps and remove the piece Toyota bolts in behind the tire. Toyota made it removable for exactly this reason. If you wheel it, trim a little up front too.
Ground clearance with the 33s went from 9 to 9.75 inches at the rear diff, and from 11.5 to 12 inches at the front subframe. So you gain almost an inch just from the tire.
2016–2023 Tacoma: 33s fit with a small trim
The 3rd gen is a little tighter. On our 2020 TRD Off-Road with stock Bilsteins, I put 33-inch BFG KO2s on 17-inch Method NV wheels with a zero offset. With zero offset they sat pretty much flush with the fender flares. Front clearance to the bumper was about 2 to 3 inches, and the rear of the wheel well was tighter at about 2 inches.
On the turn test it rubbed in one spot, the back of the front fender flare. Here's the fix:
- Trim the rear lip of the plastic fender flare with a sharp box cutter. A fresh blade makes it a lot easier.
- Trim the fender liner where it sits close to the tire at full lock.
- Push the fender liner forward and move its screw to a new spot so it stays forward. That took me from under an inch to about 2 inches of room with the wheel turned.
After that, nothing rubbed on the test drive. If you don't want to cut anything at all, go with a 32-inch tire like a 275/70R17.
What about the 4Runner?
The 4Runner is not the same as the Tacoma here. In my 5th gen 4Runner 33s video, clearing a 285/70R17 took at least a 2.5-inch lift and a body mount chop, on Method wheels with a zero offset. So if you have a 4Runner and want 33s, plan on a lift and a chop, not just a tire swap.
For the lift, ToyTec makes leveling kits and complete lift kits for the 4Runner and Tacoma. Runnin4Tacos carries body mount chop filler plates and cab mount relocation kits for the chop. Check fitment for your exact year on the product page.
Wheel offset matters as much as tire size
My tests used the factory wheels or a zero offset wheel. A wheel that pokes out further hits the fender flare and wheel well sooner when you turn. If you're buying aftermarket wheels for 33s, zero offset is the safe choice. It's what I ran on the 2020 Tacoma and the 4Runner.
I've run Relations Race Wheels on our Tacoma. Remember that the code TVO is for Relations Race Wheels specifically.
Don't forget the spare
If you're going to 33s, buy five tires. The last thing you want is a flat on the trail and a spare that's 3 inches shorter than everything else. On the 2020 Tacoma, a 33-inch tire on a Method wheel did fit in the factory spare spot under the bed. It was a tight fit. It touched the leaf spring hangers and sat right next to the exhaust heat shield, so you may want to chop the exhaust where it turns down to keep heat off the rubber.
We later went bigger and fit a 305/70R17, a true 34, under a 3rd gen TRD Pro. That took more cutting and bending. I'll cover it in the biggest spare under a 3rd gen Tacoma.
Picking the tire itself
- If you see snow, look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. The tire has to pass testing to carry it.
- If you mostly daily drive it, a C-rated tire is lighter and saves a little MPG. The trade-off is softer sidewalls, so it's more prone to punctures when you air down.
- If you wheel on rocks, an E-rated tire has a stronger sidewall. It's heavier, but it holds up better.
My verdict
If you have a 2024+ Tacoma, a 285/70R17 is the move. It fits with no lift, no trimming, and no rubbing. If you have a 2016–2023 Tacoma and you're okay with a box cutter, 33s fit with about ten minutes of trimming. If you won't cut anything, run 32s. If you have a 4Runner, plan on a lift and a body mount chop before 33s. For me personally, 33s on the 2024 Tacoma looked right without a lift. Once it was lifted, we went to 37s.
FAQ
Will 33s fit on a stock Tacoma?
Yes. A 285/70R17 (33") fits a stock 2024+ Tacoma with no trimming. On a 2016–2023 Tacoma it fits with a small trim to the front fender liner and the rear of the front fender flare.
What size tire fits a 3rd gen Tacoma with no lift and no trimming?
A 32-inch tire, like a 275/70R17. Go to a 33 and you'll need to trim a little to stop it rubbing at full lock.
Can you fit 34s on a 2024 Tacoma without a lift?
A 285/75R17 (34") will clear on stock suspension if you remove the mud flaps and the removable piece behind the front tire. Add a little trimming up front if you go off-road.
Do 33s fit a 4Runner without a lift?
Not cleanly. On a 5th gen 4Runner, a 285/70R17 needs at least a 2.5-inch lift and a body mount chop to stop rubbing.
How much ground clearance do 33s add?
On my 2024 Tacoma, going to 285/70R17s raised the rear diff from 9 to 9.75 inches and the front subframe from 11.5 to 12 inches.
