Kinetic Recovery Rope Size Guide: What Size for Your Truck (2026)

I earn a commission if you buy through these links or codes, at no extra cost to you. I only list brands I've used or tested on my own trucks.

Quick answer

Pick a kinetic recovery rope by the weight of the vehicle doing the pulling, not the one that's stuck. Per Yankum's chart, 3,000 to 4,999 lbs gets a 3/4" rope, 5,000 to 7,199 lbs (half-ton trucks like a Tundra) gets a 7/8", and 7,200 to 10,249 lbs gets a 1". For length, I'd get the longer one. In my winter recovery video I recommend a 10 meter rope, which is about 33 feet.

So, I wheel in Colorado with our Tacoma and Tundra, and a kinetic rope is part of the recovery gear I carry. The sizing part confuses a lot of people, so here's the chart straight from Yankum's site, plus what I've learned using these in the snow.

Kinetic rope size chart by vehicle weight

These are Yankum's recommendations for their kinetic ropes. The weight is the recovery vehicle, meaning the truck that's doing the pulling.

Rope diameterRecovery vehicle weightMin. breaking strengthYankum says it's for
1/2" (Racer)700 to 1,399 lbs7,000 lbsATVs and 4-wheelers
5/8" (Viper)1,400 to 2,999 lbs14,800 lbsSide-by-sides and UTVs
3/4" (Rubber Boa)3,000 to 4,999 lbs19,000 lbs2-door Jeeps, crossovers, small SUVs
7/8" (Python)5,000 to 7,199 lbs28,600 lbs4-door Jeeps, half-ton trucks, large SUVs
1" (Rattler)7,200 to 10,249 lbs33,500 lbs3/4 to 1-ton trucks, heavy SUVs

Yankum also makes 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2" and 2-1/2" ropes for heavier equipment, but for a Toyota you won't need those.

Which size for a Tacoma, 4Runner or Tundra?

If you're not sure where you land, weigh your truck loaded the way you wheel it.

What length: 20 feet or 30 feet?

Yankum sells most sizes in 20 and 30 foot lengths. In my winter recovery gear video I had a 2, 3, 5 and 10 meter rope with me, and I said it there: if you're only getting one, get the longest one. The 5 meter (about 16 feet) is a little short, and the 2 and 3 meter are definitely way too short for pulling someone out. The 10 meter is about 33 feet, so the closest Yankum size is the 30 foot.

Soft shackles and recovery points

The rope is only as good as what it's hooked to, so you want proper recovery points front and rear. On our 2022 Tundra we had to add front recovery points because it didn't come with any from the factory.

Here's how I hook up:

  1. Use a soft shackle where the edges are smooth. If something breaks, a soft shackle just falls. A metal D-ring can become a projectile and shoot in the direction you're pulling. On an aftermarket bumper or a hitch receiver point with a rounded end, I use a soft shackle.
  2. Use a D-ring on factory tow points with sharp edges. A sharp edge will cut a soft shackle. So on a stock truck with just the factory points, I'd put a D-ring there instead.
  3. Don't crank the D-ring pin all the way tight. I snug it, then back it off about a 16th of a turn. Fully tight, it can be really hard to get off after a pull, and you might need a screwdriver to break it loose.

For soft shackles, Yankum's chart puts a 5/16" soft shackle with vehicles from 1,400 to 4,999 lbs, and a 7/16" with 5,000 to 10,249 lbs. Those line up with the 3/4" and 7/8" ropes.

How to use it: pull first, then yank

In the video, our Tacoma was high centered on the last uphill section and a built 4Runner pulled us out. We didn't start with a big yank. First we tried a slow, steady pull with both trucks inching forward. That didn't do anything, so we backed the 4Runner up and it sent it a little and yanked us out. That's the whole point of a kinetic rope. It stretches and stores that energy, then pulls you out.

So start gentle, and only add momentum if you need it. Recovery can be dangerous. Use properly rated gear and safe rigging.

What I use now

These days I run Yankum ropes and soft shackles. I did a video on their Weekender Recovery Kit, and on New Year's Day 2026 we put our newer recovery gear to work on an icy Argentine Pass: kinetic rope, soft shackles and an extension, along with the winch. Yankum's kits come in Essential, Weekender and Professional versions. The Weekender adds a 2" receiver tow point to the rope, two soft shackles and the bag in the Essential kit. Their ropes are made in the USA.

My verdict

If you drive a Tundra or another half-ton, get the 7/8" rope. If you have a lighter Tacoma or 4Runner under 5,000 lbs loaded, the 3/4" is the match. If yours is built up past that, go 7/8". Either way, get the 30 foot length if you only buy one. For me personally, the most crucial piece is a hitch receiver recovery point. Everybody should have one. And if you like to wheel by yourself, get a winch, because a kinetic rope needs a second vehicle.

FAQ

What size kinetic rope do I need for a Tacoma?

It depends on what your Tacoma weighs loaded. Per Yankum's chart, under 5,000 lbs is a 3/4" rope and 5,000 to 7,199 lbs is a 7/8" rope. Size it to the truck doing the pulling.

What size kinetic rope for a Tundra?

A half-ton truck like a Tundra matches Yankum's 7/8" rope, rated for recovery vehicles from 5,000 to 7,199 lbs with a 28,600 lb minimum breaking strength.

Do you size a kinetic rope to the stuck vehicle or the recovery vehicle?

The recovery vehicle. Yankum says it on every rope: pair the rope with the vehicle doing the pulling, not the stuck one.

Is a 20 foot or 30 foot kinetic rope better?

If you only buy one, get the longer one. I recommend a 10 meter rope (about 33 feet), and the 30 foot is the closest Yankum length.

Does Yankum have a discount code?

Yes. Use code TVO at checkout on yankum.com. The code card above has the link.
